Google , the manufacturers web site, and sourceforge are generally the places I look for drivers. I will also periodically check the kernel dev mail list archives to see if support has been added upstream.
For ATI there is the gatos project (http://gatos.sourceforge.net/). I have not been very happy with ATI under linux, so I have switched to Nvidia almost exclusively.
