Not to beat this one to death, but, what I have run into is when there is a bad connection in the PHY (the physical connection to the RJ45) then the cable will sometimes need some wiggling before it works. Yes separate cards cost more but, that's why I am not a fan of putting everything and its dog on the motherboard.
