Hi All,

As a relative  newcomer to the Linux\OS Community I started of using IPC-op 142. Earlier this week I installed an IPCop 1.4.8 box with a few add-ons. I've added a URL filter, proxy server and a couple of add--ons that add nice but unessential features. When completed I had a box that functioned as a firewall, proxy server with individual user authentication and logging, as well as a URL filter with a base blacklist and user editable white\blacklist as well as domain allow\blocking. BTW, the proxy can work in both transparent or non-transparent mode.

When I set up my first IPCop box it was a difficult task for me even though I had all the instructions handy. This was a "Dave" thing. Call it exam anxiety I guess. Anyway by Ver 1.4.8 I have no problem slapping a box together in an evening and dropping it into it's new home in the morning.

IPCop, for me, is a useful tool that I still have a lot to learn about. More work with the different rules is next on my plan. As well as getting an "Orange-as-Green" add-on to work. This add-on changes the Orange interface into another Green while preventing communication between the Orange and Green networks.

A couple of questions:

1. How\Is it possible to transfer a list of users and their passwords from an old box to a new one?

2. Can the addition of users\passwords be accomplished "en masse" from a pre-compiled list or spreadsheet. The GUI used to enter individual users that are required to authenticate thorough the IPCop box prior to being permitted access to the Internet requires the following fields:
Username, Password, ConfirmPassword, and UserType.
dwatkins, mypassword, mypassword, Extended
Obviously a way to just drop this info into a file somewhere is a simpler than entering each one individually.

3. Anyone got the "Orange-as-Green" Mod working?

BTW, this is running on a P400 MHz box with 512 RAM and a 40GB HDD. CD and FDD have been removed.

Just some observations and questions,

Dave Watkins

What did you upgrade from?

I was hoping nobody was going to ask. I wasn't paying attention to the
version number before before I upgraded and I just recently chucked out the
install disc. It was like 1.3.x I believe. <shrug>

Hey, I have a box that still has a 1.2 on it. All its doing is NAT, so why
upgrade if its still working?
