Apart from the obvious flame bait, (insert emacs joke here, there are as many 
jokes as there are lines of code...), the problem is not with vim but with 
the serial configuration.  The bad behaviour can be replicated by any app 
that puts enough characters on the screen (top, atop, htop not surprisingly 
exhibit the same symptoms).
