pursuant to the other evening's meeting on clustering, here are some follow up 
thoughts:

first, great presentation on clustering (thanks for coming out mark!).

i had mentioned openmsi, turns out it's openssi. it's the same class and type 
of clustering as [open]mosix is, but is aiming to be better. whether or not 
it is, i have no idea as i'm not much into these things and keep but a 
cursory eye on them.

for another type of clustering, there's the IMHO rather cool "icecream" which 
creates ad hoc grids for distributed compiling. if you know about distcc, you 
are familiar with the concept. where icecream goes beyond distcc (which it 
was based on) is that it provides a zero-configuration set up of the grid 
(including cross-compiling), a scheduler for load ballancing and a really 
neat visual monitor.

the set up icecream, you install it on each machine you want as part of the 
grid, then start the icecream scheduler on one of them. then on each machine 
(including the one with the scheduler if you want it to be part of the grid) 
you start iceccd. ensuring the icecream bin/ directory is in your path before 
the location of the system gcc/g++ you can now begin to build and the files 
are distributed to the grid. machines can be added and removed on the fly and 
the scheduler sorts it all out.
