It can, it needs to also be compiled into your kernel (I would be
surprised if most distros didn't already do this).  It also does not
work nearly as well as samba (cifs) over wireless.

I still don't understand the love affair the *nix crowd has for nfs.  It
certainly has its place, though the majority of file serving
applications that I have seen are better served by other packages
(usually cifs).

shfs is nice and easy, but not the most stable.
