Thanks for the help last night Szemir! I was able to do a recovery boot and then apt-get install gnome-desktop. it didn't fix the icon issue, but it got gnome working again.
i'd like to upgrade to ubuntu 5.10 tonight and would value your advice. i'll be in #CLUG around 7 tonight. lemme know if that works!
