If you have allot of people wanting pictures and multimedia your going to be wanting space, space costs the host money and lots of it, ads can take care of this as long as your small (under 500MB for most) If you want to be on a server that can survive being digg'ed or slashdot'ed you should expect to pay. BUT that doesn't include the bandwidth that's just means your on a server that can handle a high load. Most hosts can handle a high load because it will happen. My server is a dual Xeon 2.6Ghz and normally hits about 5 during a slashdot. If you expect your site to get slashdot'ed or digg'ed you should have a site backup done in html ready to replace your current site because mediawiki isn't written for high traffic sites It could kill quite a few server's (and has) you should get your own server if you don't want to do that (colo or dedi). you'll need to buy a plan with lots of bandwidth if you expect this you could hit 500GB of transfer (for each). for what you want people may offer it free (with or without ads) but they'll kill your site after a slashdot or digg and or delete it. My advice is to start using google AdSense and/or offer a membership program (you might even make money) and get yourself a dedicated server. If you want prices from hosting company's around the web email me privately Travis R. PS. I'll plug my company here http://www.strikehosting.com And for the savings see http://www.clug.ca/node/291 _______________________________________________ clug-talk mailing list [email protected] http://clug.ca/mailman/listinfo/clug-talk_clug.ca Mailing List Guidelines (http://clug.ca/ml_guidelines.php) **Please remove these lines when replying
