I just did a dd of the existing linux partition (everything in a single
/ partition) into a flat file (though you can also use another
partition(s) on the hard drive, though you will likely have to wrestle
with extended and logical partions).

I just changed a few config options (ip address, hostname) on the
"guest" before making it live (mount -o loop + chroot are your friends).
