I would agree with the latter comment, though eps should be a standard, 
the generation of eps files by various apps can be different.  In my 
experience, you results can vary from no response to layers with the 
wrong priority to a perfect rendition.  You will need to try a couple of 
them to see what kind of results you get.

It also seems to be easier to open an eps file using a Mac than under 
windoze, not sure if it is related to the first point.  Have little to 
no experience do this with Linux so can't comment there.  There is a 
commercial program the was called Hijaak on the windoze side that 
allowed you to convert files in batch if you have a lot of files to 
convert.  If I remember correctly, there is a freeware program I used 
with some success, I think their site is www.jansfreeware.com.
