udev is likely what you want. With udev, I can have the kernel assign an arbitrary device name /dev/sdz to a spefic device. Then you can have entries in your fstab for your mp3 player and usb memory sticks. Works really well with the KDE automount. If you need help with udev, just drop me a line.
