This is getting annoying... :)  the grub mapping trick failed with an error 
11.  And I did try different combinations.  So, I changed the jumpers on the 
drives to make the win partition the master - just so I could create a second 
partition on the free space, and format it.  I'll Try Grub again tomorrow.

Luckily, it's not a critical requirement (yet).
