One thing you could do to eliminate some of the Windows update traffic is to set up a WSUS server. Essentially it is a server that downloads the updates and then you can push them from there. It allows you set profiles and test the updates before deploying them into the wild. I have used it before and it seems to work relatively well...for an MS technology.
