there is a wrinkle here, however: if we can't access data because it's locked
away in proprietary formats or if people don't have access to applications
they need (by category and use ("image manipulations"), not by title
("photoshop")) then the desktop will slowly and surely shrivel away.
we need to attain double digit market share to ensure both of these issues go
away, though once that is achieved whether it is 11%, 38% or 64% is not so
important to me either

and darwin isn't the only project they've either done or attempted to do the
same thing to. it's a cultural and economic issue at apple, so it's not like
they are -trying- to be evil, they just happen to be in a place where evil
things result from their efforts from time to time. their stance on drm and
patents is far more worrying, however.
