Well, likely the error in the reverse zone (or your named.conf) is
preventing bind from launching.  It looks like you have no forward DNS
for r2d2.  grep named /var/log/daemon.log works for me on Debian, though
there may be a bind folder under /var/log, or a named.log, depending on
your distro.

Adding things to /etc/hosts kinda defeats the purpose of running a DNS
server.  I would fix bind before adding an entry in /etc/hosts, as this
is only a band aid solution.
