This is all very confuzzling for me.
I refuse to believe there is not a graphical FTP daemon out there for Linux.
I just can't believe that.

FTP is really insecure. All passwords are sent in clear text, so it's
probably a good thing that you cannot log in as root. The way my server
is setup is that I only allow anonymous access to /var/ftp (this was the
default, I'm not sure how to change it). vsftpd puts anonymous users
into a chroot jail. I then created an ftpadmin account and gave in write
access to /var/ftp. In order to upload to the site, a user will have to
use scp, which transmits passwords securely. It works quite well, since
winscp is a nice gui for users on the Windows platform.
