The reason you can not do "su" but you can do "sudo su" it to force you to change the root password if you decide to install it to the hard drive. The root password on the live CD is disabled and the sudoers file should restrict who or where you can actually use sudo from.

That is not the official statement or any thing. It is just the only logical reason for using "sudo su".

I never tried sudo su...I tried su but apparently the user "gentoo" it logs 
you in as is not in the wheel group, making su a nono. sudo su seems like an 
oxy moron...lol. Why would they deny me access to use su then put me as a 
sudoer to run su? Hmmm...

At any rate, I've proceeded with knoppix and added another CD to my new chair 
(see link elsewhere in this thread)
