Looks like it was the xpm. I was wondering about that (starts with 'X'), but didn't know what the flag was for (now I do - support for the xpm graphic format). Added the appropriate entry to the packages.use file, and X no longer appears in my emerge world output. Thanks for the tips Nick! LOL - I think that makes us even now...
