Sigh, I've been trying to get ready for my LinuxFest presentation. It should have been quite simple... install some software, check it out, and present it. It's just web software, how hard could it be?
Well, in theory I should have done that by now. However, I haven't used 2/3rds of the software... ever... and most of it isn't even installed yet. To make an even longer story short: "Why?" You might ask. Well, it all boils down to a saying my loving mother has: "Mark, if you didn't have bad luck, you probably wouldn't have any luck at all." As a result of my bad luck and insufficient planning, I still don't have ready: - a laptop I can present on (a usb->ethernet adapter might solve this) - any knowledge of half of the software I'd like to present (it also isn't installed for that matter) - a laptop with the software installed on it If there's someone out there in Calgary with a USB->ethernet adapter that might work with Knoppix (and is willing to lend it to me tonight, I can pick it up, mail me off list please) I might just have a chance at being able to present. If not, eesh... I don't know if I'll be able to git'r'done for Saturday... (I'm going back to the office now to try one last laptop, but I don't have high hopes for it...) -Mark === There isn't much of a reason to read below this, I'm just very stressed out and needed to rant === Now the shortened long version: Of all of the computers I have been trying to get all this software installed on, I have come across the following problems (this week): - I installed knoppix to the HD of laptop #1. Sounded like a good idea, a lot quicker than putting Gentoo (the only distro I'm familiar with) on there. After a few hours of it not booting I decided to install FC5. Another 2 hours later and it won't install because it can't copy something over (yes, I did a media check... twice) - I installed knoppix to the HD of PC #1. Again, this sounded like a good idea. Same problem as laptop #1. An hour of googling told me that the menu.lst file was broken sometimes with the HD install. So I fixed that, only to realize that a P3-500 with 128MB of ram really isn't that fast... and that if I were going to be doing a presentation on a desktop I would be looking at the screen the whole time (not good!) - I decided to try my work laptop (#2). Everything's set up on there already and I already gave that bacula presentation with it, perfect! Well, my luck kicked in again. The laptop doesn't send proper signals to both the LCD and external monitor at the same time. For that matter, I couldn't get it to send a good signal to the external monitor at all in Linux. - So, that left my home laptop (#3). My wired network interface is dead on this! 100% dead too, not just unsupported. The wireless interface is sketchy at best and requires a NDIS wrapper or whatever that is to work... but at least the monitor output is sane!
