Localhost should point to the 127.0.0.1 entry in /etc/hosts. The actual
host name usually points to the IP of the box.

On my K/Ubuntu and Debian boxen, /etc/hostname exists for all of them,
so something weird happened.

The format of the /etc/hostname file is simple, just the short name, no
options, no long domain names, nothing.

The hosts file is a basically used to resolve names on the LAN, without
using DNS.

Once you have the hostname in the /etc/hostname file, reboot and all
should be well.

Cheers,
