If Windows were to be opensourced the first thing to ask is: How much is going open source?  The kernel including the GUI?  The kernel plus all the drivers that ship on the install CD?  The standard library souce?  All the other snot like RAS?  Plus the (meager) utilities that ship with windows?  The media player?  Notepad (yeah like anyone would want to add to that piece of dung).

PS. I grant that my disdane for MS may have peeked through a bit!

Just a note that the blog author indicates ÏF"ms went this way, they
would likely have a a license similar if not their own license similar
to OpenSolaris (CDDL), which allows for open source contributions but
still gives them the finally ok and control.
