... and small consistent input is often more effective over the long haul than 
a short major effort is. an afternoon a month or an hour a week over the 
course of a year is not only easier to manage for the volunteer, it's 
something that will have a much bigger impact than spending one weekend a 
year doing a single thing and then not doing anything else. some people will 
certainly do more than this, but even "small" contributions add up over time.

this also leads to stability which leads to growth and increased robustness.

to be fair, though, this is exactly how our society encourages us to be: quiet 
participants that wait to be called upon with the stimulus being a promise of 
personal reward before response is to be had. for many of us that's been a 
life-long conditioning. so while it may be "a little skewed" i think it's 
also the common mode of thought. discussions such as these and involvement in 
groups such as CLUG can be a good way to help break those patterns though =)
