Hi,
Of course in Linux there are many ways to skin a cat... my preference is
for an application called encfs (http://arg0.net/wiki/encfs).

This uses the FUSE method, that enables users to mount their own
'drives' without having to have root permissions. It also encrypts files
within a directory structure and therefore does not require the user to
preallocate a chunk of disk space.

There is a Windows 'read only' application, although it didn't work for me
last time I tried.
Simon.
