I have this little script that I use to test Shaw (and it works
reasonably well for other ISPs, especially if they peer with Big Pipe/Shaw):

#!/bin/bash
wget http://support.shaw.ca/troubleshooting/files/download.dat
md5sum download.dat
echo "b792d74c36bacafd71f30c1a80077577 is what the md5sum should be."
/bin/rm -f download.dat
exit 0
