I doubt that Shaw would have so much running through a single above ground wire that it could knock out half of the province. My son called me when the cable and internet shut down but the phones (ours is through Shaw) continued. A couple of hours later we had cable back but the phones died until after midnight. I'm not sure when internet came back as I'd gone to bed by then. > > > > Like I described my first awareness of the internet problem was > poor/slow connection, after rebooting I was unable to get an IP from the > network. > > It could be that part of their internet infrastucture is not UPS'ed and > was lost during the power outage..... which is bad planning. > > Further reading around their VoIP tax has given me the impression that > Shaw Digital phone is not a true VoIP service, they use same cable but > not 'over IP'. >
You are right - I was just speaking to one of Shaw's technicians yesterday and he told me that it is not voip (does not use the internet at all) and is using a completely separate cable channel to their internet service.
