I cannot elp with SuSe exactly, so I am not sure how well Yast really 
works, but there also some power saving options in the kde control center.  
Perhaps Yast a setting in here is over riding Yast.

To test the hardware, use knoppix, and see if you can disable the screen 
blanking.
