Yes Windows would have worked properly. But, before we knew the ram was screwed up dad finally said "Let's try Linux, Windows doesn't seem to be working for us..." It just kinda stuck I guess.

I guess that I don't know what role Linux had in this. I mean, I'm happy and
all that there's another Linux user, but wouldn't have replacing the RAM
enabled Windows to continue running properly?

I just don't see how Linux solved this problem or why your Dad is now running
Linux.
