At the simple end it is easy to implement DAV and iCal, however DAV does
not have a very good ACL model (basically a user gets read and write or
nothing at all).

I always though Kolab made sense as a specialized Distrto variant,
similar to the DeMudi project (a stock Debian Distro that preconfigures
the system for low latency audio work).  I understand the desire to keep
it distro agnostic but I am not ,

Another option Shawn, is Open Exchange.  It can be installed into a
stock Ubuntu environment.  There is a decent how-to in one of the Linux
mags this month (one of the UK ones, Linux Format I believe).
