Having recently bought an am2 board, I can say I'd probably stick with the 939 socket for the forseeable future... AM2 doesn't have high adoption yet, so (so the theory goes), it may become the "low end" option.
I understand it doesn't really buy anything over the 939 socket (yet), with today's processors.
