Windows has a 255 character limitation in filenames that *includes* the
path (this differs from most other modern OSs).  Reorganizing your data
is probably the solution (ie renaming filenames and directories).

As for a work around, I have not found any... other than by changing my OS.

There is probably a reason you have not turned up much in google yet.
