Shaw installs a high quality splitter to run the cable connection from 
wherever the main cable enters your house to wherever your cable modem 
is. You need to make sure the cable going to the new location is 
attached to the same splitter.

The cable modems use a higher frequency on the coax cable than your TV 
signal does, so the ordinary run of the mill splitters (read cheap radio 
shack model) do not work. You need the high end, high frequency 
splitters. They can be found at A&B sound, Visions, etc...

You probably don't need to buy one, just go to where the cable comes 
into the house, usually by the electrical breaker panel, and disconnect 
the cable that runs to the current modem location, and attach the cable 
that goes to the temporary location to the splitter that the Shaw techie 
would have installed.
