It can be used for many things.  Before worrying about TXT record type
(some interesting things can be done with it, like SPF and Active
Directory, yes AD stuffs all sorts of things into DNS), learn the rest.
 Trust me.  Oreilly Bind and DNS book.  There is a newer edition out,
but the one I have is still awesome (actually it was William many years
ago who suggested it to me :)
