Ok answering myself....

The GNU GPL page list the license:
http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html

Note the 'start of license' and 'end of license' markers.

The warranty claims (or revokation of) are not in the license, but a
seperate piece of text which:
        asserts copyright
        offers license
        disclaims warranty
        gives contact for copy of license


I guess this is important as, for example, I could use GNU Cash to do my
tax returns without agreeing to the GPL License. However a software flaw
could mean that it computes them wrong and make me liable to a penality
charge.

If would be very useful (for the developers) to disclaim warranty
regardless of whether the 'end user' accepted the terms of the GPL.
