Thanks for that - I'm not sure if I need to goto that extreme at the moment. In fact, I've almost completely ruled out this was a legitimate call - Shaw CSR's can't find a record of the call, and the guy didn't leave a number or even his name. So at this point in time, I've reinstated the webservice, and all is resuming as it was. If the guy calls back, well - then I'll deal with it at that time. Alot of you guys (Mark, Dave) thought it could definetly be a prank.
So yeah...On 10/6/06, Kin Wong < [EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:More practical advice -- not legal advice.
Not withstanding all the good practical advice you have got from Shawn
and Gustin, you should seek some legal advice. Legal advice need not be
expensive, as you are not a business (that could be a wrong assumption
on my part) or making a lot of money -- you would qualify for legal
aid. Before doing that you should probably look into the Bar
association (not sure if I got the name right), they promote their own
and will have a list of lawyers that you can go see. Make your case
short and sweet as the other person on the phone won't have the depth or
knowledge or likely patience to hear your story but getting the right
lawyer that understands a bit more of computers and internet would be
beneficial.
Document everything and draw a nice simple picture. They charge by the
second and every time they pick up a pen. You generally have a 30
minute free session so make the best use of your time.
Be nice to the secretary and ask them about the lawyers area of practise
and specialization (they don't bill by the minute). If you every need
to go down this road (you likely won't - this should be a last resort,
but do document everything) -- all lawyers are not the same, many are
risk adverse and hid behind the law and problems could take a very long
time to resolve, having the right lawyer that knows what they are doing,
resolution can be a quick as a couple of phone calls.
I think Robin Williams said it best -- 'They are starting to use lawyers
for lab experiments for a couple of reasons, there are things that even
rats won't do and the researchers don't get as emotionally attached to
the lawyers." (I probably messed up that quote but you get the idea.)
One last piece of advice, be careful who you call friend -- btw where is
your friend at this point in time.
Good luck.
