It is significantly faster then VNC, I've noticed this as well. I can't seem to find any drawbacks to it: other then the fact that VNC is more common, and AFAIK only Knoppix has the NX Client installed out of the box.

If any of you, like me, use a linux desktop via vpn day in and out they
you may be dissatisfied with the performance and reliability of VNC.  I
was using vnc to display the root console of my workstation (physically
in California) here in Calgary, but the remote machine is short of cpu
and memory, and vnc/Xserver seemed to take a lot resources which
resulted in a very slow remote desktop.

When I went looking for a solution I tested Nomachine's NX server and
client. WOW.   My remote desktop is now at least 2 or 3 times faster!

I very definitely recommend this software (free for peasants like us) if
you have a need for a remote desktop linux system.  There is also a
windoze client.
