Did anyone notice that Shipit will not be offering free Edgy CD's? Theyre stickin' to Dapper.
Perhaps this is a sign that Edgy's successor is not far off?

Sure, K/Ubuntu may be ONE of the recommended distros for newer users,
but seeing as it looks like it'll be mainly experienced users at this
fest, that may or may not be the right choice for them.
Let the needs dictate what tool/distro to use.
That said, my personal thoughts are:
*ubuntu, Suse, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, FC
- for newer users, or simple desktop type systems
Gentoo, Linux
- for the hard core, stuff (lean servers, dedicated users, etc.)
Debian
- for standard server needs
And as for your question about choosing an older version or bleeding
edge... *ubuntu 6.10 is NOT bleeding edge. It is the most recent
stable branch. Therefore, if Ubunutu were to be chosen, then why
install an older system that will need a lot of updates right away just
to get in line with what the current system offers in terms of
security/bug fixes? You should always be installing the more recent
version of a distro unless you have an app that explicitly needs an
older version.
Granted, Ubuntu 6.10 is SO recent it does have some unknowns to it. But
I can say it installed fine on my acer laptop with no issues, even
detecting the Intel video properly, and the wireless card too - no
additional configs needed, other than the usual installs of standard
apps. So, I don't see why it shouldn't be an option.
