I came across this blog today that I thought you might find useful:

It describes how to get those extra buttons on your mouse working.  It
also makes reference to
http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man4/mouse-driver.4.html, which
describes all the possible mouse options in the xorg.conf file.

After matching what the blog poster did, my volume controls, mute
button, email button and side buttons worked.  I'm just not quite sure
what the two side buttons do (so far it looks like it just changes
through the windows, if I'm pointing at a menu bar), and I have another
button for chat (I think), that still isn't working.  But these are not
big items for me...
