Ah, very simple my dear Watson. With apologies to Mitchell -- let say
we have 10 Mitchells and 10 Jesses (for those that haven't met these
individuals, Jesse is the skinny one). The camera will not accommodate
10 Mitchells so we would need to pan way back and adding 10 Jesses
behind the Mitchells wouldn't work as we would not see the Jesses at
all. Thus we need to have the Jesses up front and stagger the Mitchells
behind. (Some variation in height from front to back would also help
the composition.) As the Jesses are neither transparent nor
translucent, it would obscure the Mitchells hence giving the illusion
that they are skinner.

Therefore having more skinny people would help make the weight
challanged people look skinner.

With regards to Nichole Richie and Jenna Jameson, I had to use google to
see what you mean. The argument can be extended here as well, with more
females coming out to the event, the observer's eyes would focus on the
females rather than the males. The more they look like Nichole Richie
and Jenna Jameson, the more invisible the males will be regardless our
weight.
