I disagree, they are still used in data acquisition environment where 
the equipment is made for a high cost low volume specialty market.  
These companies see little reason to change as their clients will get 
the appropriate computer necessary to get their software and hardware 
running.

Personally, I want to test software that uses the legacy RS232 
communication under Vmware and it needs to map the virtual port to a 
real port to talk to the outside world.  Secondly, I have a portable 
storage oscilliscope that uses the serial port to transmit the 
information to be displayed on the computer screen.  Though the software 
is in windows, I would like to run it in a virtualization or wine.  And 
lastly, it only costs the computer manufacturer $2 to implement a serial 
port, but it will cost me a bunch of time and money to regain that 
functionality.
