Sounds like you've both been where we are right now. We've also come to the conclusion that we're likely going to have to seed the initial backup with a USB drive. I did have some success, though. The -z flag for rsync is probably pretty well known as it provides compression. The default Rsnapshot config file, however, does not pass that flag to Rsync. I turned it on and we went from ~400MB an hour to over 1GB per hour. That's a massive improvement and makes this a little easier to deal with. Thanks!
