The NSLU2 can be extended to do RAID, but the big problem with them is
that they have pretty modest throughput.  With a single drive I seem to
top out between 20-30 mbit/sec

It does do smb/cifs as well as NFS.

Once you mention RAID though, the price quickly scales beyond inexpensive.
These guys do RAID 5/10/1 as well as smb/cifs/nfs/ftp, but at nearly
$700 without drives, I would not qualify them as inexpensive.
