I know the whole idea of this forum is not to answer your own questions, but I think I know what I did wrong. I was downloading the iso image both on a Windows box and on kubuntu - the throughput was double the speed on the Windows box so I killed the Kubuntu download. Though the iimage was burned on a linux box, the image was obtain through a Windows box.
I smell a conspiracy here. I'll let you know how it works out, I am downloading the image again on the kubuntu box this time.
