I formatted my external drive to ext3 as the standard VFAT is a disaster. It truncates large files and ignores maildir entries. Then I built a simple BASH script using cp to copy the directories I need. I tried DAR in the past and found it unacceptable due to creating single, very large file lumps (technical talk there). Ext3 and cp work great.
