Not sure if anyone's really aware of this - but, as of 2 weeks ago - Gaim is now Pidgin.
http://pidgin.im The new version (2.0.0) has a lot of new groovyness as well. If you want the .deb (and a run down of the new features), head on over to http://www.ubuntugeek.com/install-pidgin-instant-messanger-in-ubuntu.html (There's no official .deb package........... yet) -- Cheers!
