At this point, I don't think it matters if they keep using it or not. It's more important to know that there IS another option out there, and that it's a good one. It might not be *THE* one for them (yet), but it's there.
Realistically, most people want eye candy. They like that everyone admires them for their "coolness". It doesn't take too many "That's awesome, what is it?" questions before there's no going back. Much like the iPod wasn't first, cheapest or best. Linux may not be easiest or most cooperative for most people. But there's enough "coolness" there that at least some people will fight to make it work. Some will succeed, some won't. That's OK. The end result is that it will have set in people's mind that Linux will need a few more revs before it can replace Simply Accounting on their desktop. They will look forward to that time, and they'll return to Windows frustrated that it isn't the "cool". And when it doesn't work, it'll irritate them even more. Remember there was a gizmo that helped people stop smoking by making them smoke at stupid times? Eventually they stopped because they hated smoking. Windows is helping windows users hate windows. If Linux looks good, that's just one more thing they'll add to the fire about hating windows. "This eye candy in Vista? It's not even very good..." And it needed me to upgrade to new hardware. And my DVDs don't play. And my printer doesn't work, and...and...and. They'll eventually choose Linux; warts and all; on their own. And they will never go back. If that takes a few years, so be it. We can plant the seeds of it now, and compiz is a wicked seed. It reminds me of a mangrove seed. Kev.
