General service related stuff that does not have its own log (apache has
its own for example, but bind and ntpdate do not) can be found in
/var/log/daemon.log

FYI bind messages are prefixed with "named".

It is always a good idea to look through /var/log when troubleshooting
problems.  The first question you should ask when problems occur is
"what do the logs say?"
