Gustin, if you want to control things, then one of the other boards on that list are a cheaper alternative. The "arduino decimila" costs 38.95 at http://www.robotshop.ca/home/products/robot-parts/microcontrollers/arduino-microcontroller/arduino-usb-microcontroller-board.html .
For realtime control of robots, the Pololu boards are flexible: http://www.pololu.com/products/pololu/0775/ The Orangutan LV-168 and USB programmer is a good value for 79.95 Another board worth looking at, which is more powerful, is the AVR-LIP (Lab in a Pocket). http://microcontrollershop.com/product_info.php?products_id=2161 I have the arduino, which I using to learn development with this line of microcontrollers. Its hardware and software development environment are completely open source. The tools are all based around GCC, even the commercial ones. I am just using them (avr-gcc, avr-libc, etc.) from Linux - that way I am not laying out money for compilers.
