Server 2003 is expensive, especially for the home.

Ubuntu is based on Debian.  SO there should not be a very large learning
curve.  All the important things are the same.

My condolences. I used to have to support Mac OS years ago when I worked
at an ISP.  Now I just laugh derisively and dismiss Mac users with an
SEP field.

For authentication you have other alternatives (PAM LDAP, winbind).  For
file sharing it is samba.
