I would imagine this is Sun trying to make itself into a true 
alternative to MS and paralleling the software available.

They already have the OS, the hardware (all be it in a different class 
than what MS offers), the programming platform & the office suite... now 
the have the SQL based database.  The one good thing about that is that 
there open source portfolio continues to improve.
