Always a good question. Not all distros behave the same. It is a good idea to know what you are running, since this is likely going to be first question you get asked. | to do initially is download the file somewhere in your home directory, | and unpack the file. This should create a new directory with the install | files in it. For example, if you unpack it in your home directory, you | should have a new directory named something like /home/user/lives. To cd | into this directory, open a terminal (such as gnome-terminal or konsole) | and type: cd ~/lives I noticed on the lives site that there are pre-built binaries for a number of distros (Debian, Ubuntu, gentoo, Fedora/Mandriva/Suse), which will be easier for a new user to install and maintain. I know that dynebolic ships with this app, and 64Studio will be adding it soon as well. For a pure burning app, I would use k3b. It is straightforward and reliable. It can author some types of media disks. The little video editing that I do I use other apps. Generally there is more than one program to perform a given task. Try out the alternatives to see which ones work best for you.
