Always a good question.  Not all distros behave the same.  It is a good
idea to know what you are running, since this is likely going to be
first question you get asked.

I noticed on the lives site that there are pre-built binaries for a
number of distros (Debian, Ubuntu, gentoo, Fedora/Mandriva/Suse), which
will be easier for a new user to install and maintain.

I know that dynebolic ships with this app, and 64Studio will be adding
it soon as well.

For a pure burning app, I would use k3b.  It is straightforward and
reliable.  It can author some types of media disks.  The little video
editing that I do I use other apps.  Generally there is more than one
program to perform a given task. Try out the alternatives to see which
ones work best for you.
